To say I've been busy would be an understatement but I just had to write about The Real Princess Zaria's summer experience. She went back to school a couple weeks ago so she is extremely bogged down with school work. It's a good thing, though. She's a fifth grader now, but I digress.....

In August, Zaria attended two awesome events!

I was fortunate to escort her to The Girlapalooza 2011 event which featured a meet and greet with Camille Winbush 'Nessa' of The Bernie Mac Show. Camille was so humble and she shared great tips and advice with the girls. The Girlapalooza Mother-Daughter Tea was fantastic! The girls were treated to an innovative 'green' fashion show, poetry, live music performances and self-esteem building talks.

Later that month, we attended The Pretty Brown Girl Movement. A powerful launch that highlights pretty brown girls from all over the country. 12 year old, Amiya Anderson, owner of Amiya's Mobile Dance Academy, graced the girls with an original poem sharing her story of success.

Zaria was ecstatic to see girls who looked like her doing dynamic things. I think she was so inspired that she decided to attend an audition for a local play.

My wish is that all girls, young and all, would live their dreams.

What are you dreaming?

Zaria's First Sleepover

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 192px; height: 128px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8or4IPGm1RQ/TcwLf6XuLRI/AAAAAAAAAC8/RKxFo098N-4/s200/sleepover.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5605868279042026770" />
Many of my friends know how protective of my kids I am, especially Zaria. Some may even say overprotective-oh well. A few weeks ago, Zaria brought home a birthday party invitation with a sleepover theme. Here's where the drama unfolds.......

Zaria gives me a birthday party invitation for a slumber party. I tell Zaria that she can go to the party portion but she couldn't sleepover/spend the night. Anyone that knows Zaria knows how sensitive she is so se begins to cry(but I stick to my guns-for the time being). She tells me that many of her class friends will be there. She says that Lauren(the birthday girl) didn't invite all the girls in the class-just the cool and popular ones. I still say NO.

As time passes, we have to decide what present we are getting Lauren. Zaria decides on a BFF necklace because obviously Lauren is one of Zaria's newest best friends. (Oh brother). She asks did I change my mind and can she sleepover. I say no. My husband is in earshot of the conversation now. I tell Zaria that society is not the same as it used to be. I go over good and bad touch with her. I explain that I would have to literally kill someone if they hurt her and so on and so on....

Later, my husband has a long talk with me. He says that he doesn't want Zaria to be timid and afraid of the world. He wants her to experience fun with friends and have a childhood that she can look back on and say it was fun---like we did when we were growing up. I began to waver...just a little.

Zaria and Lary urged me to call Lauren's mom to talk with her about the sleepover. I said I would. Monday- I didn't call. Tuesday- I forgot. Wednesday- I had homework and got tired. Thursday- I couldn''t postpone it any longer. I called. I asked a ton of questions. Who's invited? Will there be any boys/men there? How many entrances does the house have? Etc.....

I decided to let her go-with guidelines. She had to take her cellphone and call me before she goes to bed. If anything felt strange to call me and I would come and get her at any time. She agreed.

My husband and I took Zaria to Farmington Hills to the sleepover and I discreetly surveyed the house and the perimeter. I shared my concerns with the mom and she assured me that nothing would happen to my baby. I prayed and trusted that God would protect her. She was there from 7pm Friday to 5pm Saturday. I was a basket of nerves but everything was fine.

Zaria's first slumber party was a success..... but I told her never to ask me again! LOL.

What do you think about sleepovers?

Tomorrow my oldest son will be 21 years old! Wow, I can hardly believe it. It seems like just yesterday when we brought him home from the hospital. It hasn't been easy raising a son but it has been an experience I will always cherish. A ritual that my son and I share every year is the story of his birth. I tell him the same story every year. I will tell him that same beautiful and humorous again this year for the 21st time. The difference: This year I will share it with my readers, too.

The year was 1990. A couple of weeks before I was set to deliver my bouncing bundle of joy, I began to have abdominal pains. They were not regular but they were intense. One of my close friends went to the hospital with me(my mom met us there)only to find out from the doctor that I was having Braxton Hicks-prelabor pains. The doctor told me that I was only dilated to 2 cm(you have to be at 10 in order to begin the labor process). He instructed me to walk. He allowed me to walk for an hour around the hospital. Nothin happened so he told me I should return home and walk if I was ready to have the baby.

I was ready. I decided I was gonna have the baby that day. My house was on the border of Detroit and Hamtramck. I decided that I would walk to Hamtramck to Duncan Donuts and the ice cream shop. I wasn't brave enough to walk there and back so I decided to walk there and catch the bus back. What I wouldn't do for a glazed donut and pralines and cream icecream(my favorite back then)LOL. Well, the stranest thing happened when I got back home. As soon as I walked in the house, my water broke! I was so scared. I was by myself and didn't know what to do. I couldn't find my mom because she was out looking for me. About 2 minutes passed when she returned. I was crying just like the baby I was about to have. LOL. ( I didn't even get to eat my ice cream)My mom took me to the hospital and that's when the miracle began.

The doctor told me he had to induce labor. The nurse gave me more than was prescribed so the pain was extremely intense. I was in labor with Marty for 14 1/2 hours. On May 9, 1990 my beautiful son was born. I never got to eat that ice cream but I was blessed with the sweetest substitute. Tomorrow, my son will turn 21 years old. Can you believe it? And I still look good!

Have a Happy Mother's Day Everyone!

National Potato Chip Day and other quirky celebrations

March 14th was National Potato Chip Day and we celebrated by having a Potato Chip Party. That's right, we had over 100 different varieties of potato chips for the kids to taste-test. The boys and girls enjoyed barbeque, salt and vinegar, cheese, hot, sour cream and onion, ruffles and more. We played games such as Hot Potato and Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head Contests. The younger kids colored pictures of potato chips. Potato Chips are America's favorite snack foods and one of Zaria's favorite snacks.

After having the party, I started researching other strange holidays. We went to eat at Friday's too. My mom had a salad. It had eggs and bacon in it. It looked good. My dad and brother had burgers. I had a cheeseburger with fries dipped in ranch dressing. I LOVE ranch dressing. We ate appetizers, first. We had cheese sticks and boneless wing and potato skins.

I love family day because we don't have many family days with my big brother because he is 20 now. He hangs out with his friends and girlfriend. He works and studies music and makes beats. I love my big brother. He always asks me for 'baby hugs.' He has been doing that since I was little. Sometimes we argue but I know he loves me.

I can't wait until we have another Family Day. This time I want to go to Red Lobster.

Do you ever have family days? What is your favorite things to do? I gotta get ready for bed and school so I will talk to everybody later. See ya.

Best Friends Forever

When Zaria was 3 years old, she met someone who she says will be her best friend forever. Zaria and Shaniyah were unseparable in Head Start. For two years, they shared the carpet together. LOL. They talked about what 'areas' they would play in. They always chose the water toy area. Water has been Zaria's favorite since she was a baby. Swimming is her favorite thing to do. Those girls can talk on the phone for hours at a time about, seemingly, nothing at all. The kids go to different schools now and they don't talk to each other as much but nothing can challenge that friendship. Zaria has met many friends in her young life but if you asked her who her best friend is she would say 'Shaniyah', proudly.

That's how I feel about my bff, Lorie. Like Zaria and Shaniyah, we have been friends since we were very young. We met in 4th grade. We've been through births, deaths, boyfriends, break-ups, weddings, divorce.....basically the good, the bad and the ugly. I remember in school(8th grade, I think), we talked so much that the teacher separated us. He moved Lorie to the back of the room. That didn't stop us. We started passing notes :) Sometimes we would be late for school. One day I had the bright idea that we shouldn't walk into class late together. I told Lorie to go first. I would follow in about 5 minutes. My teacher, Mr. Rowan came out to the hallway and said "It didn't work. I know you were late together." LOL. Those were the days.

It hasn't been always peachy cream. We've had our arguments and fights but we always get past it and make up. I remember one time Lorie came over to visit. I think we were about 16 or 17. She wanted me to go to a party with her. I told her that I was expecting my boyfriend to come over. Since I hadn't heard from him all day, she convinced me to go to the party. About 45 minutes later, my boyfriend came over so I told Lorie that I wasn't gonna go now because he was here. Oh boy! She performed and made a crazy scene. 'How you gone play me? You said we were gonna hang out. Now he comes over and you change your mind." Then she said something that snapped my wig and his. She said 'Now what am I gonna tell these GUYS when they come and get us." Making my boyfriend think there was someone set up for me. Boy was I mad!!!! But, we got over that.

Next week, Lorie is moving hundreds of miles away to live in Tennessee. I am going to miss her sooooooooo much! Yesterday we hung out and had a good time but I know that I will feel a void after she leaves. I know we will definitely keep in contact and I will travel to Tennessee a lot but not being able to see her regularly is going to be hard.

Has your best friend ever moved away? How did you handle it?

Live Life 'Til Lifeless

That is a quote/motto that I borrowed from my 20-year old son. It is quite apropo this week because our family just buried my father-in-law last weekend. Sometimes after funerals, people start to reflect on their own mortality.(I know this is probably one of my 'heaviest' blog posts. A few days ago, I asked my husband if he thought his father did everything he wanted to do in life. He said that he believed he did.

Have you? Are you living?
What is your bucket list? A bucket list is an chronological list of things you want to do or see before you 'kick the bucket.'

A mini version of my bucket list is:

1. I want to travel.
a. I've been to The Bahamas. This year I'm going to Jamaica. I want to see Japan and paris within the next 7 years.

2. I want to receive a bachelor's and Master Degree-maybe even a Doctorate.

3. I want my husband and I to renew our vows in the next 4 years(our 10th anniversary).

4. I want to take The Real Princess Zaria to Hollywood. That's where she longs to go(Don't ask me why)

5. I want to help my son realize his dream of being a music producer.

This is just a mini list. I have so many plans.

Is there something you want to do? Someplace you want to go?

Why haven't you?

Is it because of work/your job? Well, do you work just to pay bills or do you work to have a better life? Bills will always be here-but you won't always be here.

Is it money? I suggest you find some way to make additional income-a temporary part-time job, perhaps.

Is it time or your perceived lack of time? There's no time like the present. Time waits for no one.(I know that one was cheesy. LOL) But you get what i'm saying , right?

I encourage all my followers and guests of this blog to live life 'til lifeless.

What is your bucket list?

Being Mommy- The Best Job in the World

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 139px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7WNzKxCr9c0/TSqCUNj12PI/AAAAAAAAACw/UKa8xG7USNs/s200/strawberries.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560399973691283698" />
I really love being a mom! Yesterday, Zaria and I had the time of our lives. It was our 1st Mommy/Daughter day of 2011. I started this for Zaria a few years ago when she was just 3 years old. We normally choose several things to do or places to go(just us). One of our favorite days was in 2006. We dressed in formal attire and had dinner at a popular downtown restaurant. Everyone thought we were going to a wedding. The highlight for Zaria was when a gentleman took his hat off and bowed. She said, "Why did he do that mommy?" I said, "Because you are a princess."

Yesterday, our day started with picking up a half dozen chocolate covered strawberries that I ordered for Zaria. Chocolate Strawberries are her favorite! We then went shopping. Bath and Body Works was our first stop. Zaria loves the smell of its Signature Collection. Black Raspberry Vanilla is the scent she picked. We then ventured to Fairlane Mall. Claire's is the store that she likes getting her jewelry. I bought her a pair of earrings and a necklace. We had lunch in the Food Court. She chose Taco Bell(another one of her favorite's). Afterwards, we watched MegaMind at the AMC Fairlane. We had so much fun.

I knew she had a good time but when she posted that it was the best time ever on Facebook, it confirmed it for me. I can't wait until next month. I really don't know what could top this:)

And then I get an email today that I am a nominee for Mommy of the Month with a popular Mommy Blog site. By the way, please vote for me at http://www.youngwifeandmom.com

Being a mom is probably the single most important and rewarding role in the world. I am soooo happy that I have the charge to care for such a beautiful princess.

My Top 10 in 2010

Several years ago, maybe 15, before I met my gorgeous, loveable and handsome hubby I had a crush on a guy(who turned out to be a loser). Someone once told me that guys liked flowers, too. I decided to purchse a half dozen roses for my crush. At the time, I didn't have a car so I guess you'd have called me a female scrub(of TLC fame) LOL.

Anyhoo,

I walked to a neighborhood or 'hood' florist shop to purchase the roses. When I arrived, many of the flowers were wilted or dead. The owner wore a moo-moo/nightgown and house slippers. Her son was the clerk. The kid was all of 7 and didn't know how to ring a sale. Bad customer service all the way around.

I vowed that I would never patronize another black-owned "hood" business.

Again, that was several years ago. Years before I met real business owners. Business owners who value their customers. Those that give friendly service with a smile. Owners who teach their children proper business practices. Business owners that dress for success. Many of the very people who own businesses in 'the hood.'

Today as I celebrate the fourth Kwanzaa principle: Ujamaa-Cooperative Economics
To build and maintain our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together
I would like to highlight 10 small or homebased businesses(not all are black owned but all are worthy to be recognized)that exude professionalism and exemplary service. These businesses are those that I've visited online, via telephone or in person.

My top 10 in 2010 are.... Drum roll please:

1. LOL. A few days ago my daughter was sick-very sick with a re-occuring high temperature. She had chills and a stuffy, and most times, runny nose. It got so bad that at -home remedies no longer worked so I took her to see a doctor. While at the doctor's office, a conversation began. A conversation that always begins when I share the origin of Zaria's name.

Zaria's name means Princess but honestly I didn't know that when I named her. There was a show several years ago that I loved called 'The Parenthood.' The daughter on that show was named Zaria. I fell in love with the name and vowed to myself that when I had a daughter I would name her Zaria. That's before I was married and my hubby had other ideas. Zaria was almost 'Jessica.' But I won that battle :)

After talking with the doctor, I started to think about other names that have unique stories behind them. Names that are spelled differently. Names that are unisex. Names that are only ONE LETTER LONG! That's right. I heard that someone named their child the letter B. I thought that was so different and even cool when I heard the story behind it. The mom let her other children name the sibling :)

When I was growing up, I had a neighbor named Demassius. He told me that it was from The Bible. My husband's name is Lary(spelled with one r). My oldest son's name is Kondace but his nickname is Marty(there is a real interesting story behind that. I will share in a future post. I promise). I have a nephew named Sincere. Don't ask! LOL.

So, I ask: Do you have a unique spelling for your child's name? Did you have a childhood friend with a quirky name or nickname? Is there an interesting story behind your name?

My Favorite Things

Hi Everybody! This is Zaria. I have been really sick for a few days but I have been reading my moms posts and everybody's comments. Christmas is coming up and I started to think about some of my favorite things. Not toys or clothes but places I like to go and people I like. It's kinda like when me and my mama watch Oprah. I made a list of 10 things because it is 2010. Tell me which ones you like:

1. China Town Buffet in Dearborn, MI is my favorite restaurant.

2. Panda Buffet in Westland is my 2nd favorite restaurant.

3. Hannah Montana is my favorite singer/actress.

4. Selena Gomez is another favorite singer/actress of mine.

5. Justin Bieber-well, what else can I say?!

6. Easy Bake Oven was my favorite Christmas present.

7. Jonas Brothers is my favorite singing group.

8. I love coloring book.

9. I like different colors.

10. I really loves cell phones. I really want a pink Blackberry cell phone by Verizon Wireless.

What are your favorite things?

Kids on Facebook? Between blowing her nose, taking medicine, sleeping and feeling BLAH-she has been on FACEBOOK. Some of my friends and family don't feel like she should be on Facebook. I rather her be on Facebook, than FaceBook For Kids....those kids are so brutal. LOL. Anyhoo, I guess I understand where everyone is coming from but I definitely monitor her page.

Daily, I check out what is going out and what is coming in. If there is a 'friend' that is spewing vulgar or inappropriate material, I make her delete him/her. Recently, I made her delete her 20 year old brother. He was saying things that were too delicate for her princess ears. Zaria 'likes' generic pages like Disney, Skittles, and HIP Hop Harry. She 'friends' her classmates and family members. She listens to YouTube videos from Justin Bieber, Willow and Cymphonique. What's so wrong about that?

Honestly, I use Facebook to network and connect with friends and she does too. There has been so many well wishes coming through her FaceBook page(mostly from close friends and relatives). I don't see anything wrong with it if is frequently monitored by ME. I definitely would like feedback on this. Do you think youngsters should be allowed to have a FaceBook page? Why or Why Not?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://princesszaria.blogspot.com/2010/12/kids-on-facebook-do-you-agree-or.html' title='Kids on Facebook? Christmas decorations, gifts, snow and Christmas Cards. Only, this year I haven't received many. Are sending Christmas Cards a thing of the past? How many cards did you send/receive this year? As a child, I remember my parents receiving dozens of cards. My mom used to hang them along the perimeter of the walls. But today so many people are getting away from this tradition. A lot of times when you visit blogs, you really don't get a true feel of who the blogger is so I would like to give you a glimpse of who Cheryl Lynn Pope, Mommy Blogger really is. This is the abbreviated version I shared with my faceBook friends. Here goes:

1. My favorite guilty pleasure is icecream. (I really like Sanders Butter Pecan. They have real pecan halves. yummy.)

2. My favorite movies are: My Best Friend's Wedding, Love Jones, and The Mirror Has Two Faces. (The first and 3rd really are tear jerkers for me)

3. I used to rap when I was a teen-ager. My name was Rappin C. Here's an excerpt: ' I'm rappin C and my bod is boomin'. Get with me and stop assumin.' All my raps, you say are dead, they're not dead they're from my head. What about you, who bite from Run , you should get fresh and get you some. Perpetratin rapper is written on your face. You rap so bad you are a disgrace. You don't even rhyme when you try to bust a rap. Maybe that's why you're full of crap. You wouldn't know a rhyme if I read it in your face. Step to me and i'll put you i your place. You think you're educated but you really not..... (I well I forgot the rest. Surprised that i remembered that much. LOL.)

4. I lived in the same house for 26 years. (Moved in 1996 after my mom passed.)

5. I've never been on a train.

6. I married a great guy I met in middle school. We lived around the block from each other.

7. I have 2 kids. A 20 year old and a 9 year old.

8. I interviewed Famous Amos and Adam Sandler when i worked in radio.

9. I dabble in publicity for authors and I'm really good. (I was able to get my latest client featured on FOX 2 and MSNBC just to name a few.)

10. God is the reason for all my successes. I really love HIM.

Did you know any of these things? Share some random facts with me.

Everyone Feels Blue Sometimes

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 197px; height: 256px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7WNzKxCr9c0/TPCeUx-fStI/AAAAAAAAACU/3oq1ravOWx4/s320/blue%2Bblog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5544105221143087826" />

It's so funny but everyone that knows me always sees me with a smile on my face or a cheery disposition. My former employer used to call me 'Little Miss Sunshine.' I've had co-workers ask "Why are you so happy?(when everything around was falling to pieces). I definitely choose my battles. I don't let every challenging situation get me down but I am, of course, only human. I do feel blue sometime.

I know this is the Thanksgiving holiday and it's the time for giving thanks and being grateful for everything I have(shelter, family, health, etc.) and I am thankful for those things and more. But again, I am only human and I sometimes reflect on my lack. I would love to live in a better home/better neighborhood, be able to pay my bills on time or before time, be healthier(could stand to lose a few pounds) and I would love it if my mom was still around to share my successes.

You know, I guess that is what this 'pity' blog is all about.

I MISS MY MAMA

Sometimes I am so envious of my friends and colleagues. Those who have had great successes recently were able to share them with their moms. If they launched a book;their mom was there. If they won an award; their mom was there. If they gave birth; their mom was there. If they were featured in the news; their mom was there.

See where I'm going with this? I've had some major successes happen to me recently and I would love to share them with my mom ----So sometimes I feel melancholy.

Just bare with me. I should be back to my old cheery self tomorrow. Just venting I guess.

Do you ever feel gloomy? What do you do to snap out of it?

Happy Birthday, Sweetheart

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 276px; height: 183px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7WNzKxCr9c0/TOkh33YesPI/AAAAAAAAACM/jvFtriZpEtw/s320/birthday%2Bpresent.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541998060099252466" />
I am proud to announce that today is my husband's birthday. I normally don't include posts about my husband in the blog but this time I had to. We have celebrated about 12 birthdays together and each time feels like the first. I don't understand why some people don't celebrate their birthday(aside from religious beliefs). Birthdays are the anniversary of your birth. That should be cause for celebration.

My husband is and has been the greatest. He is an excellent dad, too. He supports my dreams and vision. He gives me brutally honest feedback when I need it. He supports his family, sometimes by working two jobs to get us what we need and want. I just wanted to celebrate him today by saying 'I appreciate you.'

The other night we were discussing some past gifts that I'd given him. My husband attended Suomi College and before we married he would also share about the fun he had at Suomi. "We did.... It was so much fun when..... I will never forget the time...." He loved his experience at Suomi but for some reason he didn't have any college memorabilia. So I surprised him. I would ask him things like where was Suomi located? Was that in upper Michgan(doing my investigative research). I called Suomi in Hancock MI and ordered him a Suomi T-Shirt. He loved it!

He also likes bowling and one year I got him a bowling ball. He called all his friends that night. The next year, a pool stick. Oh boy was he happy. This year I'm giving him the gift of appreciation(sounds cheap doesn't it?)

It's not if you think of it. So often we take our spouses for granted. We feel comfort in the fact that they are supposed to do this or that. And they are but we should feel grateful and happy because some spouses don't do the same. So this year, I will show my gratitude and appreciation.

Happy Birthday to all those who are celebrating birthdays today and in the month of November. How do you celebrate?

Teach Your Kids To 'Do The Amiya'

This post is prompted by an 11 -year old Detroit business owner named Amiya Alexander. While taking dance lessons, she observed that some of her friends were unable to. Their parents couldn't afford the classes and/or were unable to get to the classes. After bringing this to her mother's attention, she drafted a design of a vehicle and a plan that would allow her friends and others to enjoy convenient, affordable lessons. Amiyah had a dream and a goal. (They are different, you know). Amiya's story below:

I am encouraging all parents to set goals for themselves so their children can witness goal-setting first hand. Take this process a step further and have a dream/goal-setting session with your child(ren). On the way to school this morning, I shared with Princess Zaria that I was going to begin taking classes again in the winter to pursue my goal of higher education. We had a long talk about college(or as long as the ride to school was). She asked why I wanted to go back to college, what classes I needed to take and why I hadn't finished yet? This was the beginning of the dialogue for a teachable moment. After the conversation, I looked to my right and noticed that Zaria was in deep reflection. LOL. Imagine that!

So I asked, "Zaria, what are you thinking about?"

Zaria: Can you take two main classes in college?

Me: Yes, that is called a double major or a dual major.

Zaria: What about three?

Me: I had a friend who thought about a triple major.

Zaria: That's what I'm going to do. I'm going to major in Art, Drama and Dance.

Me: That's called a triple threat, Zaria, and I'm going to help you make that happen.

What are you imparting in your child's life? Are you helping them to set goals and realize their dreams?

No TV for a Month?

Sounds like a punishment, right? But it isn't. Several months ago, the government issued digital boxes to those who didn't own digital tv's. We were one of those families. A few weeks ago, the box expired, broke, went off line---basically The Pope Family had no access to a television. At first it was hard. We watched DVD's all weekend(the box went out on a Friday evening). Princess Zaria and I watched Dreamgirls until she was able to act out all the parts. I can't hear 'Step into the Bad Side' without rolling my eyes. LOL.

We exhausted all of our dvd's in a little less than a week. Then, we started borrowing movies. We have a box full of VHS movies but who has the antique equipment to play the movies???? After watching movies, we began playing board games. We played Scrabble, Taboo, Uno, Sorry even DVD Disney Bingo. Things started getting easier. We began talking more. How was your day today led to full fledge family discussions. We talked about school, work, friends, favorite foods, etc. Sometimes, I don't miss the tv as much.

When I was in high school, I had a teacher (Mr. Glass) who proudly claimed that he didn't own a tv. I think he called it the 'boob tube' or something weird like that. He said that he used the time to read or travel. I was skeptical back then and thought "How could anyone not own a tv-on purpose?" Well, as I'm older I see. Now, I'm not saying we won't get another box or purchase a digital tv but it has been an eye-opening experience.

The next time you hear a media campaign urging viewers to turn off the tv for a day, try it. Try it for a week or even a month. It will, at the least, bring your family closer.

Do you think you could go with television for a week?

What's For Breakfast?

I guess, maybe, I'm hungry. While researching other blogs my stomach started growling. It actually made me think about my childhood. When I was younger, my mom used to cook us a hot breakfast complete with pancakes, sausage, eggs, grits, toast and juice. To be truthful, I really don't like breakfast food but I could go for my childhood breakfast right now.

Then I thought: Zaria does not have those many memories of a hot breakfast. Everything is rushed. We're hurrying for school so she'll grab a pop-tart. Most times she will just have a bowl of cereal and juice. Sometimes on those rare occasions when I feel like it, I will cook grilled cheese and sausage. Man, the more i write about this the more I feel like a heel. I should start getting up an hour early and prepare a good nutritious hot breakfast like my mom did.

But wait, my mom was a stay-at-home mom. She didn't work(until we were older) She didn't own a business. She didn't manage a nonprofit. She didn't plan regular children events. She didn't attend networking functions. She didn't drive. She didn't chaffeur us to after-school and Saturday events.

She had time to make a hot breakfast.

What's your excuse for not cooking breakfast? LOL

She Loves Books But Justin Bieber is her Favorite

About a month ago, Zaria brought home one of those Scholastic Book Forms. You remember those? It's the one that has about 50+ book descriptions with cover pics. Well, Zaria picked her 4 book choices right away....a month ago. Everyday since then she's been reminding me that I have to give her $12.00 for the books. "OK Zaria. I'll give it to you when it's due."

Today it was due. Last night she says that I need to give her the book money. Well, the thing is I had some unexpected things come up so we had to limit the book purchase from 4 to 1. She didn't like that at all. "Ok. But we're having a book sale at my school this week, too. How many books can I get there?

"Look, I say. Either you are going to order the books from this form or buy one at the book sale at school, not both.(In my sternest mommy voice, if you can believe that. LOL). She decided to order the book.

Finaly, I say "What book did you decide on?" Thinking maybe she would have selected the book on magic tricks(she loves to watch magic shows) No. Maybe the book on The Purple Princess, after all she is Princess Zaria. No, not that one either. "Well, I guess you want that scary book since Halloween was last week." No, not that one either.

Out of all the books in that catalog, Zaria decided on " The Justin Bieber Quiz Book." How was your Halloween? Mine was fun. I had a lot of candy but I did not eat it when I first got it. I didn't know if it was bad or good. I'm smart. I went trick -or-treating with my cousins. I was Dorothy (From The Wizard of Oz/ The Wiz). When my auntie took me home I was very sleepy. My feet were hurting from me running and walking. I fell right to sleep. What did you do for Halloween?

Where is the Music For Children?

A few months ago, I was talking with a friend about music for our kids. If you tune in anytime to any music station on any given day you hear explicit lyrics and racy undertones. What do our kids have to listen to? There, of course, is KidBop but it is just kids singing those racy songs with a few words taken out. It's not the same. I have a 9 year old daughter who loves music. What option does she have? There is Radio Disney. They play songs by artists such as Miley Cyrus, Hannah Montana, The Jonas Brothers.....but as they have gotten older some of their lyrics have evolved. What's a parent to do?

In walks Cyphonique aka Lil' Miss Swagger. For those of you who don't know, she is Master P's daughter and Romeo's sister. She has clean lyrics and she is hitting the music industry by storm.

Now, Willow Smith is doing her thang with "Whip My Hair." I usually work with authors so I am a self-proclaimed literary publicist(in my spare time). I do, however, work with local small businesses and nonprofits, as well. Recently, I had the opportunity to assist a Detroit area Professional Face Painter (http://www.sandysland.com) with media exposure.

The angle was for a Halloween segment. The facepainter described what paints are good for children skin, etc. Well, Princess Zaria was the live model! At first, she was nervous. i mean, a nine year old on broadcast television(http://www.clickondetroit.com/) can be a little unnerving. But, she handled it like a pro. She was even able to put the facepainter at ease.....she was extremely nervous:)

As I spoke with Zaria later that evening about the experience, she told me "I will remember this forever. This was the best time of my life." Wow! Imagine as a mom or dad---hearing that.

What memories do you recall as a child? What experiences have you shared with your child that will last for a lifetime? There are just so many hours in a day! Sometimes I feel like I take on too many projects but, again, I love what I do. I think there must be a balance, though.

Everyday I must be a wife and mother. There is no getting around that. But I think I can chhose how I allocate my time with other "jobs." Maybe I can write on Mondays and Wednesdays. I could promote my clients on Fridays. I could perform the administrative duties of the business and nonprofit on Saturdays and Sundays(no, wait-that's my family time). OK. Maybe weekend nights I could do that. I could do my homework in the car while waiting for Zaria to get out of school. The LSCO meetings are planned so I don't have to worry about that. Unless Zaria has a Yoga lesson on that Tuesday.

When do I fit in my grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning the house...

OK. Let me start over. Wife and mother everyday. Author on Tuesday. Event Coordinator on Thursday...

Now, I need to add Time Manager to my list of duties but I don't know when I would find the time.

Ouch. I do ok for the first 6 weeks and then things start to fall off. I promise that i will wake up an hour and a half earlier to prepare myself for the day, make a hot breakfast, do Zaria's hair, make sure her clothes are ironed and get her to school on time. It doesn't happen that way.

It seems I wake up 20 to 30 minutes before we have to leave. We're rushing to get in a bowl of cold cereal. Hair is all over the place(both of ours, LOL).Clothes are super wrinkled. Zaria can't find her shoes. "Mommy, where is my bookbag?" AAAARRG! I want to scream!!

Last week, I braided Zaria's hair the night before(thinking I was doing something), put a silk scarf on to keep everything in place and wouldn't you know it.....The next morning(Zaria is a wild sleeper). I couldn't find half of her barrettes. Somehow they came out while she slept. We're looking under the pillow, behind the bed, under the doll's arm----They were on the floor behind the rug!

I can't win for losing!

This week I promised that I would be more organized. I will go to bed early, lay out crisply ironed clothes the night before, do Zaria's hair(minus the barrettes until the morning), get up an hour earlier and fix a hot breakfast before getting her to school on time.

We've only been late twice......and today is Tuesday! It's that time of year again. This semester Princess Zaria will be entering 4th grade. I met her teacher, Ms. Ivy, last week to discuss the curriculum. The 4th graders will be doing some real challenging work this semester, especially in math. Getting ready for this season of education actually takes me back to a time before Princess Zaria. Rewind 16 years ago, my oldest son was preparing to enter preschool.

I was so excited for him. At that time, he was the only child. I knew school would be a great outlet for him. I taught him the basics at home but I wanted him to gain social skills with other children. Back then, schools tested children before they entered preschool. If they failed the test, they were admitted. If they passed, they were placed on a waiting list.

My son passed the test!

He was asked his first and last name- passed.
He was asked primary colors-passed.
He was asked to count to 10- He counted to 20. Then he counted to 10 in Spanish!!!!

Well, let's just say he didn't learn to socialize with other kids that year:(
I always wondered why some parents encouraged their kids to dumb down for preschool.

Well, he's 20 now and music production is his Spanish!

I'm so proud of my children. The first piece is a halter-style blue and white spring dress. She will wear white wedge sandals with pretty(we haven't decided yet) polish. The 2nd outfit is a cranberry floor-length strapless gown. She will accessorize the gown with creme and cranberry trimmed bobbi socks and a cranberry necklace. We are still deciding if she will wear a tiara. I think it would be a good idea but I will let Zaria decide.

Zaria has been practicing her turns and waves at home----everyday. If you have a chance to stop by Chrysler on June 5, please buy a ticket for only $6 to see Princess Zaria and her classmates show off their talents and outfits. By the way, this is a pancake breakfast fundraiser so bring your appetites:)

Girly Day

I was never a girly-girl when I was growing up. I played with dolls and had a ballerina musical jewelry box but that was the extent of it. My daughter Zaria, on the other hand is the complete opposite. She can spend hours in the mirror combing her hair, she loves wearing dresses, American Next Top Model is one of her favorite shows!

Princess Zaria has a make-up case that would put most make-up artists to shame. Tonight is Girly Day. We will be doing our nails and toes. Or should I say Zaria will be leading this. She has the nail separator(I think that's what it is called.) She has the nail polish, puff balls and nail remover. We probably will be doing makeovers tonight, too. I do love her glitter gloss:)

To top it off, we'll probably be doing this all while watching 'The Devil Wears Prada.' This is a movie about the fashion industry and how it can change a person. I actually liked it.

A bit of advice to all those future moms out there: If you were not a girly-girl growing up you just might have one so get your make-up cases ready!

Celebrating Dads in June

Royalty Industries and The Real Princess Zaria and Mommy Blog introduce the ' I Love My Dad' Contest. I'm so glad dads are getting a special day(besides Father's Day). A lot of dads get a bad rap but there are a ton of dads doing a great job! Although this is a mommy blog, I want to share a story about my dad. When I was younger, I had problems in math. I'm still not a whiz but i get by:) My worst challenge was fractions. I just could not get it. I was getting C's in Math and I think that was only because I was a good student. I didn't give the teacher any problems.

My dad saw that I was struggling and even though he only had an 8th grade education, he was a mathematical genius! He tutored me endlessly. My dad worked in the factory on the afternoon shift so he was not home when I came home from school but my practice fractions were. He would leave about 10 problems for me to complete and when he got home after midnight he would check them and reassign more. I passed my fifth grade math class because of my daddy.

There are a lot of dads that are doing wonderful things in their homes, church and communities. Celebrate them. If you have or know a dad , tell him he's doing a wonderful job. Share with us your wonderful dad stories.

Report Card Anxiety

Last week Detroit Public Schools issued report cards. For the most part, The 'Real' Princess Zaria is doing exceptional well(besides the c's in Science and Social Studies). She earned all A's and B's. The last 3 tests in Science have been very challenging for her. Even princesses need help sometimes. Well, I was anticipating a drama show when I picked her up from school but to my surprise, she was very calm. She knew she would have to pull up in those courses and she didn't 'perform' like i thought she would. My little princess is growing up. I guess I was being more anxious than I thought she would be.

I'm wondering do other parents and their children experience report card anxiety? I mean, should the emphasis really be on the grades or should it be about what is learned and retained? For example, when my oldest son was in school he didn't test well at all. I can rememember quizzing him on spelling all week. He would master our oral quiz but when he got to school---blank. He almost always flunked the tests!

Last report card marking Princess Zaria earned 3-A's, 6-B's, and a C(in science). When kids don't do well on report cards does that mean they aren't bright?

I would like for kids and parents to weigh in on this. How do you feel about report card day?

New Title

I'm over six months into the release of my latest book, The Adventures of Princess Zaria, and in the words of Hannah Montana I'm looking for my next -next. My husband and son have been asking me when will I start writing my next book. While taking a power nap, I came up the the next theme. I think(and it may change) I will enter Princess Zaria into a spelling bee. Similar to the motion picture, Akeeyla and the Bee. How does Princess Zaria and the Bee sound? Or some variation? I am hoping it will serve as a literary motivation for children(especially girls)to enter spelling bees. As I'm writing this, I also want to congratulate all the participants and winners of The Scripps Spelling Bee, regional and school-based bees.

Please give me your feedback on The Spelling Bee concept for the next Princess Zaria Project. I welcome and encourage all suggestions.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Everyone!

2009 was a great year for us. My 2nd book was released in July. I debuted The Princess Zaria Fan Club, The Royal Gazette, The Little Princess Book Club and so much more. We have big plans for 2010 starting with Mommy and Me at the Movies. I have partnered with The Bel-Air Theatre in Detroit to host Movie viewings specifically for moms and their infant and pre-school children. I love this new venture. Please come out and support the venue and mommyhood.

The first meeting for The Little Princess Book Club starts January 30. This is to instill the love of reading in little girls ages 6-10. In addition to the book they will read, the little girls will receive: a tiara, a bookmark, and a princess journal to write notes. The girls will receive a vocabulary word(from or inspired by the book). They will learn the definition and be prepared to write a sentence using the word in context.

The Princess Zaria Fan Club is what I'm most proud of in this series. All little girls ages 3-10 are encouraged to join. As a member of the fan club all girls will receive a membership card, princess stickers and tattoos, a tiara, VIP seating at all PZ events, Advance Notice of all activities, a quarterly newsletter, a monthly e-newsletter and much, much more.

Activities for kids. Although The Adventures of Princess Zaria is targeted toward little girls, we do plan to offer activities/events that little boys will enjoy, too. Please stay tuned to the website for details.

Our new website will be launched in about another week or so. Be prepared for contest and giveaways. We will feature products that moms and children enjoy. We will have info about author school visits and our innovative parent parties. Please feel free to leave comments as you enjoy our posts.

I'm so happy to serve parents and little girls(and boys). This is a new decade for the princess within. Enjoy

By the way, Princess Zaria is on vacation until Monday, January 4. She is excited about her new year and looks forward to meeting all the little princesses all over the world.

Be Blessed

When I Went To DAPCEP Today

When I went to DAPCEP, I made a light bulb light. . Yesterday was Thanksgiving and we had a wonderful time. When many think of Thanksgiving they think of food: turkey, candied yams, ham, sweet potatoe pies, dressing, mac and cheese, etc. Believe me, we had all that and more. As a family, we visited my in-laws like we do every single year. This time, we decided to gather in a circle and let everyone share why they were thankful. As you'd imagine, many of us were thankful for family, health, jobs, home and friends.

Then the time came for Princess Zaria to recite why she was thankful.

"I'm thankful for nature. If it wasn't for nature, we wouldn't have bees. If we didn't have bees, we wouldn't have honey. If we didn't have honey, we wouldn't have anything to sweeten our tea."

I laughed so hard and loud. There's a book that I read to my daughter regularly(because it's one of her favorites) entitled 'Just Like Mommy.' The little girl in the book wants to wear dresses because her mom wears them to work. She wants to have her hair in curls because her mom does and she wants to drive a sports car when she grows up? Why? Because her mom does. This got me to thinking about my own little girl.

Zaria reads a lot of books because she sees me doing it. She has dozens of journals and diaries because she sees me writing all the time. She's beginning to ask can she stop wearing ponytails and braids because she wants to wear her hair down-Just Like Mommy. Zaria likes to help me in the kitchen because she sees me cook daily. I think the list is endless. She even contributed a chapter to an anthology written by students of Chrysler Elementary School. Why? Because it was a school project. LOL. And because her mom is an author, she was pleased to do it.

What are you doing that your little one will emulate? Is it positive or negative? I can't blame her, though. I guess if I was 8 I would much rather be with kids than a room full of adults. I guess I'll have to work a little harder to promote this wonderful children's book. We used to have real big fun. Do you remember bobbing for apples? And all that candy. We didn't have to go to the police station and have it scanned. We knew our neighbors and our neighborhood. When we couldn't afford costumes , our parents used make-up and we weren't teased. We had nice costumes and scary ones, too.

Fast forward to 2009....

Last year a child got shot trick or treating. My daughter, Zaria, is so sensitive and emotional. I'll tell you what happened last night in a moment.

A few months ago while over her grandparents, Zaria witnessed one of the kids get a leg caught in the couch. (it happened to me before when I was younger and probably many others). Well, Zaria was so upset. I think she thought the little girl would break her leg or something. As the girl calmly struggled, Zaria violently cried. Even after the child was 'free' , Zaria could not be consoled for over an hour.

Another instance.... My husband got pulled over by the police(while driving black) in Dearborn. Zaria was with him (they had been shopping for a dress for the Father/Daughter Dance.) Just the thought of them possibly taking my husband away to jail sent her into hysterics. The police felt so bad that they apologized, profusely, to Zaria.

There are others but finally the reason for the post:
Last night Zaria went skating almost straight from school. Before leaving for the rink, she left her bookbag at my in-laws house. Suffice to say, from all the excitement she forgot it. Well, after she gets home and realizes what she had done it was as if the world was coming to an end.
Mama: " Did you fall and hurt yourself, Zaria?"
Zaria:"Yeah, sniff sniff but that's not it."
Mama: "Did anyone hurt you or was anyone mean?"
Zaria: While bauling, "No."
Mama: Did they not want to play with you because you're just learning?
Zaria: "NO. THAT'S NOT IT?
Mama: Well, Zaria what's wrong why are you crying? I can't understand between your screams. Calm down and tell me what happened?"

Now this is the kicker....

Zaria: "I left my bookbag over Nana and Papa's house. My homework was in it. Now I'm gonna fail 4th grade! Waaaaaaaaa!!!!!
Can you believe it? Share your kid's sensitive moment if any.

A Very Proud Day

"I am very pleased to announce....." were the words that accompanied the letter that said Zaria was selected for her school's choir. Last year, Zaria was not selected. I think she purposely tried to fail the audition. See, Zaria is very shy but I'm trying to break her of that. Her dad told her that she should give it her best shot, so she did. I mean, she's always singing and dancing around the house. She sings all kinds of songs, even Rock n Roll!

Zaria's favorite(adult video) is Dreamgirls. She knows all of the parts and even tries to sing in two and 3 part harmony( that's very difficult for one person. Almost impossible!) I am so proud of Princess Zaria. So proud that tomorrow we will celebrate with cake and icecream. Zaria's favorite is chocolate icecream with chocolate cake and chocolate frosting, Did I say she likes chocolate:) ?

The first performance is the holiday program. I'm not cooking tonight. I'm so tired of hearing "What's for dinner?" After working all week, I want a no-dinner break. I do feel bad because as a parent I have to feed my daughter but who says I have to cook it. October is National Pizza Month so I think I'll order a pizza to celebrate. Anyway, I get tired of cooking the same ole thing. How many times can you cook chicken and not start looking like one? It's not that I don't like chicken but I've fried it, broiled it, boiled it, baked it and it's still chicken!

I gave up red meat years ago but there are so just many things you can make with ground turkey or fish. You know , I don't think it's the food at all. I just don't want to cook tonight. I was watching the Travel Channel the other day and it's a condo cruise ship that have chefs cook for the owners. That's what I want . I want a personal chef. And a personal housekeeper. My mommy told me 3rd grade would get more challenging. Oh yeah, my mommy even told my teacher that she wanted her to give me more challenging spelling words. I think I hate that word----challenging. I'm a little nervous because I have 3 tests today. We're practicing for the MEAP test, too. I heard that this is a very important test.

My mommy told me that writing this blog would help me with my vocabulary. I like SuperBowl parties (even though I hate football). I even have been to several Waiting To Exhale parties when it was popular. Recently, I have found several unusual holidays and celebrations. Did you know that National Cookie Day is in October? National Pizza Month is also in October. National Icecream Month was in July(that was the month of my book release party. I had an ice cream social booksigning to celebrate). There are other holidays that border on weird, even bizarre. Take a look:

Poultry Day is March 19-Give a chicken a hug
April 4th is Tell a Lie Day
Take Your Pants For a Walk Day is July 27th

This crazy one is on the top of the 'Wow' list---Virus Appreciation Day is October 3rd. There is also Daddy Blogs but since I'm a mom I am a little bias. These Mommy Blogs are all the rage. One mom has agreed to be my mentor in this blogosphere(If that's a word:) Check out the Mommy and Daddy Blog. There are so many others-just google mommy blogs to find a list.

My new blog is a little different because it's a mommy/daughter blog. Zaria will be sharing posts as well. Her first post is set for tonight after homework, of course. She is excited to write to everyone. I'm not sure if she will post about Hannah Montana or ICarly(Her 2 favorite shows) or maybe she'll talk about pizza which is her favorite food . Chinese food is next on the list and she has taken a liking to Sushi. Yuck! I just can't get with the taste or lack thereof.

I'm so excited about this venture. I guess it's because we'll be doing it together. We will review movies, products, and services. We will talk about school, exercise, icecream and more.

This is how it will go:
I will post one day
Zaria will post one day
We'll post together once a month.

If you have a product or service that you'd like us to review, let us know and we'll send you details on how to submit and our review guidelines. This is going to be fun. I'm as excited as The Real Princess Zaria.

In the meantime , check out my new book The Adventures of Princess Zaria and while you're at it join The Princess Zaria Fan Club.

Adult Cartoons

What do you think of adult cartoons like Family Guy and The Cleveland Show? It resembles the black ball of pool. You ask it a question and shake it. It then gives you the 'magical ' answer. Well, Princess Zaria received one yesterday. "Will I get a cold like my daddy?" Answer: Cannot answer at this time.

The result: Princess Zaria is a wealthy ninja who may catch a cold soon.

If you had a magic ball, what would you ask?

Princess Zaria Invents a Simple Machine

Just in time for Black History Month, Princess Zaria becomes an inventor. Well, sort of. As homework for her DAPCEP class, Zaria improved upon the lever. She wrapped a ruler(the simple machine) in High School Musical wrapping paper and she used a thick children's dictionary as the object. She lifted the book by using the lever to demonstrate how her simple machine worked. Ordinarily, Princess Zaria uses the help of the villagers around the castle to help her but this time she wanted to do things for herself. I think she wiggled it until it came out. This is her fourth 'baby' tooth. First, the two middle ones at the bottom, then the two front teeth. When her first tooth fell out she was over her grandparent's house. Somehow, the tooth fairy magically knew she would be there and left her a dollar. Then the other came out and she got another dollar(from her grandparents). When she got home, the tooth fairy's assistant left Princess Zaria four dollars. When the third tooth came out, she was given one dollar from the tooth fairy's other assistant and then the tooth fairy came back and left Zaria 7 more dollars. The rationale was a dollar for each year. Last night, the tooth fairy got lost in transit. Somehow, she 'forgot' where we lived because she had so many teeth to pick up last night. While in tears, Zaria knew that the tooth fairy wouldn't forget her tonight so she left her tooth in a red velvet box. How do you deal with the tooth fairy? It should be a happy occassion as this is a major milestone but not in Princess Zaria's eyes. She cried for an hour after his departure. Let me give some background info: Zaria and her brother are 11 years apart. I didn't think they would have anything in common but seven years later, they are as thick as thieves. They watch cartoons together, they have the same favorite food--pizza, they play board games together ; they have been virtually unseparable until now. She's very excited and a little nervous. I, on the other hand, am looking forward to this experience. Although, I'm thinking about changing schools. Shhhh, don't tell her yet! I am looking at Chrysler Elementary as an option. It is a drive for us but I think it is worth it. Chrysler has foreign language-her school doesn't. Chrysler has high academic awards through Skillman- her school, not so much. Chrysler has latchkey-nada again. I think I really like Chrysler because it has a journalism focus. She'd be following in my footsteps:) But really, Zaria earned all A's in first grade. The coursework seemed very easy to her and I just want her to be challenged a little. What do you think? If anyone has experience or knows someone with experience with Chrysler, feel free to leave a comment.

Contests

I used to view online contests as gimmicks. Within the last two weeks, I have won 2 contests.

Last week, I won 4 passes to the premiere of "The Longshots" with Ice Cube and KeKe Palmer. Today, I ws sent an email that I won the new Veggie Tales DVD from SingleMom.com. My Princess Zaria will love it!

My advice to everyone is take a chance. You just may win. I've been so busy getting ready for The Detroit Literary Empowerment Gala. I have secured so much media coverage for the event...It's going to be spectacular. Besides that, I've been working on my image. I still haven't decided how I will have my hair--an updo with accesories or down with curls. I have, though, found my gown. Let me tell you about it. Well, it's... no I'm not gonna tell. You have to come to the gala to see. But I've gotta tell you about the shoes. They have the cutest, nope--I'm not going tell you that either. Again, you'll see at the gala. In case you haven't noticed, this is a tease so you will attend the gala. This I will share, though. My nails and eyelashes will be......

To be continued----at the Gala!!!!

one down, one to go

Yesterday my oldest son graduated from high school. Wow , how time flies. I've got to tell you about this.....

We had a haircut issue. For some reason, Marty wants to have an afro. Well, everyone but him thinks he looks so much better with a fade. That was our first challenge. Can you image an afro on a green bean? Let me explain- Marty had to have a money green suit, well of course most stores don't carry that color so LIME GREEN was his next choice. But wait, I've got to tell you about the cuff links. The suit had hints of blue so he had blue, king crown cufflinks. That's right. I think he watches too many 70's movies. LOL

Now to the good part. The actual commencement was lovely. I cried 3 times-once when he walked out to the senior section, then as the choir sang Marvin Sapp's 'I never could've made it' and lastly, as he received the diploma. But I wasn't the only one. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. Even my husband was caught wiping away tears.

Well, one down one to go. Only 10 more years!!!! Zaria is only in the 2nd grade:(

First Day Of School: Who'll Cry More...Her or Me? By Cheryl Pope

My five year old will start kindergarten soon and I couldn't be more happy and apprehensive at the same time. This will be my first time away from her for longer than a couple hours. Will she cry? Or will Icry? Will she miss me? Has she mastered sharing? Her teachers...Will they be compassionate?

I remember her first day of preschool. I was a nervous wreck. We walked in the door and as I tried to prepare her for the experience she broke free and joined the 'circle time' already in progress. I, sheepishly, wimpered to her that I would be right back but she just fanned her little hand at me as if to say "Just run along, I'm alright!" The funny part is that when her day was done she didn't even know that I was gone.

But this is different. It's an all-day program. It will start at 7:00am and endat 3:30pm. She'll eat a full lunch, they'll have recess, and she'll probably have to take a nap or have rest time. How will she react? Will she cry for me? Will the teachers have to call me for reinforcement? I don't know, but I'll be ready. Maybe I should bring my own desk and lunchbox to her class. Yeah, that's right. I'll sharpen my No. 2 pencil and bring my matching Dora The Explorer lunchbox. I hope I can find a school uniform that will fit me. What do I call the teacher---Ms.-so-and-so or by his or her first name.

No. That just sounds ridiculous. I'll just get her ready for school. Kiss her on the cheek. Wish her well and hope she has a great time. I have to be the adult and allow her to experience the wonderful joy of the first dayof school....just like MY mother did!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://princesszaria.blogspot.com/2008/06/first-day-of-school-wholl-cry-moreher.html' title='First Day Of School: Who'll Cry More...Her or Me?
